Frequently asked questions

" What does mentoring offer?"
Mentoring offers new or novice nurses the opportunity of receiving expert guidance in developing as a professional nurse. This might include skills in leadership, and working collaboratively with other nurses and/or disciplines, decision making, policy analysis and becoming active in the profession.

" What can I discuss or ask for help with?"
Your discussions should center on your nursing career and how you can develop in the profession and expand your practice.

" How long does it take?"
Mentoring relationships vary depending on the needs of those involved. It is up to both parties to negotiate the length of the relationship. This might be established prior to the commencement of the relationship or be an ongoing negotiated process.

" What if the relationship doesn't work?"
It requires openness and honesty to identify when an relationship is networking. Once agreed by both parities the relationship should be terminated and the mentee can access the College Website (members area) if they wish to establish a further mentoring relationship.

" What happens if issues come up that the mentor can't help me with?"
You can ask your mentor to refer you to someone who may be able to help you or seek assistance outside of your mentoring relationship.
