When a mentoring relationship is established it is preferable that
both parties set goals and timelines for the relationship. However,
often circumstances change and either the mentor or mentee decides
the relationship is not working for them. At this point some relationships
just drift apart and contact becomes less frequent and ceases. This
can be hurtful or discouraging for the other party who may be left
wondering what they did wrong. An alternative is for the person who
wishes to discontinue the relationship to acknowledge this and for
both parties to discontinue the relationship understanding this is
part of the process. Discussing termination of the relationship well
in advance (i.e during the establishment of the relationship) also
makes it easier should this situation arise.
