Pilot: Community Cardiac Failure Nurse Practitioner Clinic for Taranaki
Heart failure is a major medical problem which adversely impacts on many lives.  It accounts for 1% of the annual health budget, approximately $NZ50 million in 1994 (Doughty, Yee, Sharpe, & MacMahon, 1995).  The cost is likely to be higher today due to inflation and because admission rates for heart failure have risen by 10.6% over the last five years (National Heart Foundation of Zealand, 2004). Numerous trials have demonstrated the significant benefits of heart failure clinics in terms of patient outcomes and cost-savings

Nurse Practitioner Facilitation Programme (NPF)
The specific role of the NPF is to increase the number of positions for NPs planned in DHB strategic plans, the implementation of NP development models by the sector, to raise awareness of the NP role and the identification of opportunities and barriers to NP development and employment.

The Nurse Practitioner Advisory Committee of New Zealand (NPAC-NZ) identified the need to have accessible in one central point information about all research related to Nurse Practitioners in New Zealand . To that end, NPAC-NZ contacted education providers and researchers during 2004 requesting information for the database. To date, information has been collected on the research projects listed below. Further research information will be added from time-to-time as NPAC-NZ is notified of new research.

Proceedings from Forum to Progress the Nurse Practitioner Role
For two days 80 forum participants came together to identify barriers to the development of the Nurse Practitioner role, determine processes for dealing with these, and develop strategies for protecting and nurturing the Nurse Practitioner role as it develops in New Zealand.
