Nurse Practitioner - An Introduction

The College is pleased to make available information material supplied by the Nurse Practitioner Advisory Committee about the role of Nurse Practitioners in New Zealand.

This is a short introductory presentation on Nurse Practitioners in New Zealand. It provides key information for nurses on the Nurse Practitioner model in New Zealand and the application process.

The session has been developed jointly by representatives of the Nurse Practitioner Advisory Committee of New Zealand (NPAC-NZ), the Nurse Executives of New Zealand (NENZ) and the Nurse Educators of the Tertiary Sector (NETS). It is now being promulgated nationally to all nursing groups. Its purpose is to deliver clear and consistent messages nationally. Please use it.

There is still a considerable knowledge deficit within nursing about the role of the Nurse Practitioner. Nursing groups will be working jointly to raise awareness of the Nurse Practitioner role and its potential to improve the health outcomes of New Zealanders.

This education package is one tool in the strategy to begin raising awareness.

NPAC-NZ will be actively working with other nursing groups to implement a wide ranging strategy to raise awareness of the Nurse Practitioner potential with policy makers, health funders and managers, nurses and the public. For successful implementation of the Nurse Practitioner model in New Zealand a sound understanding of the Nurse Practitioner model is needed. This requires a concerted effort and NPAC-NZ needs your help. Use the presentation and encourage others to do likewise. Feedback is welcomed.
