All nurses deliver to people with diabetes. The National Diabetes Nursing Knowledge and Skills Framework (NDNKSF) has been developed to assist all registered nurses to demonstrate that they are adequately prepared to provide the required care and education for the person with diabetes and related comorbidities, whatever their practice setting. The NDNKSF has had significant multi-professional input and endorsement from the relevant national professional colleges and the New Zealand Society for the Study of Diabetes. To promote best practice, the NDNKSF is linked to national guidelines, standards of practice and the Nursing Council of New Zealand's competencies for registration. Furthermore, it provides an excellent framework for demonstrating the required knowledge and skills when applying for accreditation as a Diabetes Nurse Specialist through the Diabetes Nurse Specialist Section of NZNO.
Its purpose and application are well described in the early stages of the framework.
These include:
Defining for nurses the knowledge and skills they need to learn for competence in their practice Providing education program learning objectives
Informing position descriptions
Assisting with contract parameters
Assuring quality of practice
Helps to prepare nurses who wish to progress to advanced practice roles in care delivery and leadership
