Nurse Practitioner

We are responsible for the safe, secure and humane containment of approximately 10,000 prisoners housed at any given time in 17 prisons around New Zealand. Each of our prisons has a Health Centre which is primarily nurse led health service, delivering high quality primary care services that meet New Zealand health sector standards and legislative requirements. A key focus is to reduce disparities in health status in the prison population and achieve integration of care, thereby allowing for effective rehabilitation of those in our care.

Reporting to the Health Centre Manager, this newly introduced, integral role will provide a comprehensive range of health nursing services promoting best practice. Recognised as an authority in primary health care practice, the Nurse Practitioner is a clinical expert and will provide expert nursing assessment and care delivery.

In particular, you will:

  • Provide clinical leadership
  • Screen, assess, diagnose and prescribe
  • Manage medicine and prescribe
  • Provide emergency response
  • Plan care for acute and long-term conditions
  • Refer patients as required

We are looking for registered Nurses in the Nurse Practitioner scope of practice who has the following:

  • A minimum of 5 years recent clinical experience in primary care and or mental health nursing
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of medical, legal and ethical responsibilities when providing healthcare and prescribing
  • High standard of cultural competency
  • Recognised as a nurse leader
  • Excellent team member with strong decision-making, facilitation and communication
  • Able to handle ambiguity and complexity
