Introduction:
I have been a RN for over 25 years and an NP for 6 years. I have also worked as a clinical nurse educator, clinical nurse specialist, and a clinical charge nurse, so I have personal insight into these roles too. I am English but have lived in NZ for over 16 years. I have three teenage children and am based in Auckland. I work as an NP and also as a Senior Lecturer at Massey University currently.
I am passionate about lifelong learning, reflective/ethical practice, resilience building, and promotion of a strong nursing identity. I see supervision as an essential tool to promote personal and professional growth, to retain nurses in nursing roles and to promote excellence in nursing practice. All of the above will benefit not only the individual nurses but patients and services overall. I am honest, trustworthy, and empathetic and would offer a safe place to explore and process professional experiences and challenges.
My clinical experience has largely been with children and youth and includes paediatric ICU, paediatric cardiology, paediatric surgery, paediatric HIV and more recently in the Emergency Department (where I see predominantly children and young people but adults too, on occasion).
I have worked on and off for over 13 years in the academic setting too, teaching/leading both undergraduate and post graduate papers. I have coordinated the RN prescribing practicum at Massey university for the last 3 years as well as being a faculty member/academic supervisor on the NP practicum. During this time, I have successfully supported a number of aspiring RN prescribers and NP interns working in a variety of settings including primary care, NICU, mental health and older adults. I believe I have required knowledge, experience and skill set to offer professional supervision to anyone who feels my experience may be relevant to them.
I have studied Māori culture and biculturalism academically, philosophically and professionally and have insights and experiences from this perspective. However, I have no lived experience of what it is to be Māori or Pasifika living and working in NZ. As a supervisor, I would hope to foster cultural safety through mutual sharing of cultural perspectives, values and needs; honest, authentic and respectful communication and acknowledgment of the impact on colonisation on Māori people and the continued inequities they face. I also have some experience at supporting Māori nurses or those working with Māori peoples and the challenges that arise from working within Eurocentric health models/services. Thus, I would not presume to offer cultural support but I can provide an overall willingness to explore issues around culture together.
