Role / Title
Nurse Practitioner / Professional Supervisor
Qualifications
NZRN, NP, MN(Hons) PG Cert, Professional Supervision
Introduction
I live in Rotorua and though I have been nursing for many years, was a late adopter of post graduate study, completing my masters in 2014 and becoming a Nurse Practitioner in 2016.
I continued my studies, completing a post graduate certificate in professional supervision during the first year of the pandemic, little realizing how important this role would become as we start to emerge from three very challenging years, and nurses are burned out and exhausted.
I am a New Zealand trained Registered nurse and a UK trained midwife, though I have let that lapse. I have worked in the UK, NZ, Western Samoa and Niue, mostly in Primary Care but also as a nursing tutor, midwife and neonatal intensive care nurse.
I have, in the past, been involved in the political side of health as a board member and then interim chair of a PHO and multiple national committees. I stopped this involvement to concentrate on clinical care when I became an NP.
In my work, I am a mentor to NP interns, nurse prescribers, nursing and medical students and I enjoy seeing their skills and confidence grow.
I see an increasing need for nurses at all stages in their career to have access to professional supervision. We spend our time supporting others and we also need that support.
I have only ever wanted to be a nurse, and now I can use my experience and training to help nurses get the best out of a career that can be exhausting and challenging, sometimes joyful, sometimes sad but is the most rewarding role I can imagine.
