Introduction
I inherently want to help people; it’s in my DNA. Whether listening and supporting or offering advice if asked for, this fills my cup. I have been a Midwife and Nurse for over 20 years and have completed post-grad studies in Well Child and Counselling, and I love hearing stories. I started my Nursing career in the ICU (in Ireland) and then, on my return to NZ, trained as a Midwife. I have worked as a Nurse in a rural hospital, LMC, Maternity manager, Clinical Coordinator, Plunket Nurse, Women's Health Nurse, and am currently working for myself as a Midwife specialist offering birth debriefing, pregnancy loss support, antenatal and postnatal support, and decision-making support. I have mentored New Grads through the First Year of Practice programme from the College of Midwives. Supervision for me is imperative to good practice. Primarily, it is looking after the healthcare system's biggest asset - the nursing staff. To have a space to openly talk about what is going on for you is what is needed in this fast-paced world.
Supervision provides an opportunity for individuals to engage in confidential discussions regarding their professional responsibilities. It facilitates reflective practice, enabling practitioners to move beyond their comfort zone and adopt a growth-oriented mindset, while staying true to their values and professional scope. Through supervision, professionals can critically examine and reflect on their responses to workplace situations and develop effective strategies to address various challenges. Essentially, supervision provides a structured environment for open dialogue and debriefing, in a culturally safe way, helping individuals maintain a clear separation between their work and personal life. Research indicates that health professionals who participate in supervision tend to have longer tenures in the workplace and report greater career satisfaction.
So, if you like to be yourself in a confidential, non-judgemental, and growth-encouraging way, with a good dose of humour thrown in, I might be the one for you.
