Pharmac Notification

Pharmac has made changes to improve access to funded HIV medicines, making it easier for people living with HIV, or at risk of acquiring HIV, to access treatment when they need them.

From 1 November 2026, people will no longer need to meet Special Authority or Hospital Restriction criteria to access funded antiretroviral medicines.

We've also made two antiretroviral medicines, emtricitabine with tenofovir disoproxil and dolutegravir, available on a Practitioner's Supply Order (PSO) for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). This means prescribers can keep these medicines in their clinics for immediate use when needed.

We have worked closely with the health sector to ensure these changes improve access to HIV medicines while maintaining appropriate clinical oversight. They are not intended to change who manages HIV treatment.

More information about the decision is available at:

These changes are intended to reduce barriers to accessing HIV medicines and support timely access to HIV treatment and prevention.
