New brand of methylphenidate available from 1 October 2026
We’re writing to remind you that Pharmac is funding a new brand of methylphenidate – Rubifen LA – from 1 October 2026.
This decision is part of our work to strengthen supply, provide more treatment options for people with ADHD and narcolepsy and support the prescriber eligibility changes on 1 February 2026 for ADHD stimulant medicines.
Supply information
We are funding five strengths of Rubifen LA from 1 October 2026.
10 mg and 20 mg strengths are available.
30 mg should be available by the end of September 2026.
40 mg and 60 mg should be available by late October 2026.
Pharmac will provide updates on stock on our website. This represents the stock held by suppliers. It may not reflect the stock available at wholesalers or pharmacies.
What you need to know:
From 1 October 2026, Rubifen LA will be funded for people with ADHD and narcolepsy who meet existing eligibility criteria.
It is a generic version of Ritalin LA and will be available in the same strengths as Ritalin LA (10 mg, 20 mg, 30 mg and 40 mg), with an additional 60 mg strength also funded.
Rubifen LA will be funded alongside all currently funded brands.
What does this mean for prescribers and pharmacists?
Rubifen LA will be listed under SA2411, which generally covers first-line and/or lower-cost brands and presentations.
These SA criteria reflect clinical advice that most people respond well to cost-effective options and support responsible use of public funding while ensuring access to alternatives when needed.
A bpac resource is available to support prescribers and pharmacists with ADHD stimulant prescribing, brand switching and regulatory requirements.
What about narcolepsy?
Although this is not a registered use for this brand, it will also be funded for narcolepsy under existing criteria, consistent with other methylphenidate products.
This provides narcolepsy patients with an additional treatment option, which is particularly important given the complexity of managing narcolepsy and the impact of previous supply disruptions
