Nurse Practitioners are transforming healthcare delivery across Aotearoa. As access, equity, and workforce challenges continue to evolve, there has never been a more important time to strengthen the voice, influence, and impact of the Nurse Practitioner profession.

 

Following the recommendations from our incredible review group, we are seeking an exceptional leader to become the inaugural Director: Nurse Practitioners New Zealand (NPNZ). This is a unique and exciting opportunity to lead a nationally respected professional organisation and help shape the future direction of Nurse Practitioner practice, policy, workforce development, and system influence. Reporting to the College of Nurses Aotearoa Executive Director and working closely with the College Board, you will drive strategic NPNZ priorities, champion innovation, build strong partnerships with government, regulators, health sector leaders, professional bodies, and iwi, and ensure Nurse Practitioners are influential wherever decisions about healthcare are made.

 

About the role


This role offers significant autonomy, national visibility, and the opportunity to make a lasting contribution to the health and wellbeing of people and whānau across Aotearoa.

 

As Director, you will:

 

  • Lead the strategic and operational direction of NPNZ within the College.

  • Influence national policy, workforce development, and healthcare reform.

  • Advocate for the advancement of the Nurse Practitioner profession.

  • Drive organisational and financial sustainability and growth.

  • Provide membership support, advice and oversee education programmes.

  • Lead communication, engagement, and public profile activities.

  • Ensure NPNZ remains future-focused, innovative, and responsive to emerging opportunities and challenges.

 

Who we are looking for


We are seeking a visionary and credible leader who combines strategic thinking with the ability to deliver results.

 

If you have the following experience, we want to hear from you!

 

  • Current New Zealand Nurse Practitioner registration and APC.

  • Proven senior leadership experience with strategic, operational, and financial accountability.

  • Strong understanding of the New Zealand health system, health policy, and workforce development.

  • Demonstrated success influencing stakeholders and building effective partnerships across complex environments.

  • Outstanding communication, advocacy, and relationship management skills.

  • Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, equity, and improving health outcomes for Māori and underserved communities.

  • Ability to work independently, lead through influence, and navigate complexity with confidence and integrity.

  • Experience leading a professional membership organisation, advocacy body, or national programme.

  • Established networks across nursing, government, education, and the wider health sector.

  • Experience in media engagement, public advocacy, and thought leadership.
