High Court judgement exempts hospices from providing ‘assisted dying’ services

on 19 June

A High Court judgement passed on June 16th  says hospices will not be forced to provide assisted dying services if New Zealanders vote to legalise voluntary euthanasia at this year's general election.

The decision by Justice Jillian Mallon also says aspects of the End of Life Choice Act are causing confusion among health providers and the population in general.

Hospice New Zealand had asked the court to rule on several questions, including whether organisations can conscientiously object to providing assisted dying, before we are asked in September to decide on what side of this debate we stand.

We felt this was an important judgement to share with you and the full text of the judgement can be found here:  http://www.nzlii.org/cgi-bin/download.cgi/cgi-bin/download.cgi/download/nz/cases/NZHC/2020/1356.pdf
