Te Tari Taiwhenua/DIA is consulting on gender registration processes - we want your views on third parties

on 16 June

Tēnā koutou

Te Tari Taiwhenua (Department of Internal Affairs) has just opened consultation on gender registration processes.

This consultation could be relevant to your organisation and/or members. We want views on who can be a third party supporting applications by young people or children to self-identify the sex or gender on their birth certificate. Third parties could include registered professionals or persons known to the child. An ability to self-identify the sex or gender on their birth certificate is especially important to transgender, non-binary, takatāpui and intersex people.

Further information on the consultation and how to have your say is below, and on this webpage: bdmreview - recognising gender on birth certificates - dia.govt.nz

We look forward to hearing your views!

Consultation now open – have your say

We are pleased to let you know that consultation is now open on the self-identification regulations and registering gender for people born overseas.

A discussion document, and information on how to make a written submission, are available at this webpage: bdmreview - recognising gender on birth certificates - dia.govt.nz

This work is most relevant to transgender, non-binary, intersex and tatatāpui people. Allowing people to self-identify the sex or gender on their birth certificate was enacted in 2021. Children and young people need a letter of support from a third party to self-identify the sex or gender on their birth certificate. We want your views on third parties.

Shorter ‘quick read’ documents are also available on the webpage.

Submissions close on 25 July 2022 and can be emailed to bdmrr@dia.govt.nz

Submissions will help us to shape the design and development of gender registration processes. Please share this information about having a say across your organisation.

If you have any questions, please check out our webpage at bdmreview - recognising gender on birth certificates - dia.govt.nz or email the team at: bdmrr@dia.govt.nz
